Hello, Visual editor was deployed as an opt-in editing tool in Assamese wikipedia about 2 months ago. However it seems the tool doesn't support Assamese script well. While writing with some tools reproduces only vowels or consonants, the in-built keyboards do not work at all. Kindly look into this matter urgently before it is released as default editing tool. The discussions can be found here: http://as.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A7%B1%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%95%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%AA%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%A1%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%AF%E0%A6%BC%E0%A6%BE_%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%BE%E0%A7%B0%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%BE:%E0%A6%AD%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%9C%E0%A7%81%E0%A7%B1%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B2_%E0%A6%8F%E0%A6%A1%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%B0 Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to report this! (In reply to comment #0) > doesn't support Assamese script well > While writing with some tools > in-built keyboards do not work at all Can you please provide more information / exact steps to reproduce the problems, plus information about browser and version? Also, what are "some tools" exactly? Also see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug . Thanks!

Thanks for pointing out the problems with the report. * I have tested it in Mozilla Firefox 22 and Google chrome 23. * There are currently 6 input layouts for Assamese under ULS. While trying to write Assamese in visualeditor with any one of them, NO Assamese character comes out. * 'Some tools' refer various Assamese writing tools like to Rodali, Baraha, Azhagi+, Avro barnana etc. With Rodali, there seems to be problems with vowels like ী (ঈ), ূ (ঊ), ৌ (ঔ). So while trying to write 'অসমীয়া', it becomes 'অসীয়া'. 'মূহুৰ্ত' becomes ' ূহুৰ্ত', 'কৌটি' becomes ' ৌটি' etc. with Azhagi+, the problem is more. Only the last vowel character of a word is shown in visualeditor. So 'অসমীয়া' becomes 'া'. With Baraha, the problem is again with vowel characters like ঐ and ঔ. So 'সৈমান' becomes ' ৈমান'. Similar problems exists with Avro.
Hello, Thanks for reporting this. We are currently working to resolve the several issues around using Indic language scripts on the VisualEditor and we expect to resolve them soon. The problem reported in the current bug is also known and exists in other Indic scripts as well. More discussion about this topic can also be found on bug #49569 . Thanks.
I think https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/80080/ may have solved this - let us know!
Going to provisionally mark this as fixed - please re-open if you find that it is still happening after tomorrow (when the code will go live on the Assamese Wikipedia).
Hello. I'm reopening the bug as the problems mentioned earlier are still there. Nothing has changed.
(In reply to comment #6) > Hello. I'm reopening the bug as the problems mentioned earlier are still > there. Nothing has changed. Which wiki did you test? The changes only went out to MediaWiki.org last Thursday, 12 September (so you can test these at https://mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor:Test or similar) - they will not be released to the Assamese Wikipedia until this Thursday, 19 September.
I tested it in Assamese wikipedia because on 5th September it was mentioned that "please re-open if you find that it is still happening after tomorrow (when the code will go live on the Assamese Wikipedia)". I tested it in mediawiki today and found some problems. I'll wait until Thursday and test it in aswiki again. Thank you.
Hello Gitartha, could you also please add some screenshots if you find any problems after your next test? Thanks.

You can use this at http://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/ - we believe that we may have fixed the issues (or, at least, changed the behaviour) since you tested it. Thank you!
Hello developers, I'm regularly checking the visual editor in Assamese wikipedia and now it supports the "external keyboards" nicely. There is no problem with rendering of Assamese characters as I reported earlier. However NONE of the 6 in-built keyboards are working as of today. Trying to write something with those keyboards render only Roman characters. I reported the same problem in last August also. Here is a link to my sandbox page in Assamese wikipedia where I've tested the visualeditor with different keyboards. https://as.wikipedia.org/wiki/user:Gitartha.bordoloi/visualeditor_test I've tested it on Mozilla Firefox 26 and Google chrome 30 (windows 7 pc). I'll be glad to hear about any new developments. Thanks.
(In reply to comment #11) > NONE of the 6 in-built keyboards are working as of today. I wonder if this is the same as bug 58662 comment 5 which is marked as a duplicate of bug 49569...
