we really need to thoroughly check that deserialization and handling of entities in whatever (old) formats they may be stored is good with Wikibase DataModel 1.0 appears to be some issues as experienced on test.wikidata and beta wikidata / wikipedia.
The title seems wrong. This is about the deserialization code no? Not the DataModel itself?
Infrastructure is already in place to do such compat testing. See the data and integration folders at https://github.com/wmde/WikibaseInternalSerialization/tree/master/tests So it should be easy to add additional item versions there.
Actually it is not clear to me what the exact thing to solve here is. No clear bug is reported, and "test more" is not well defined. So when is this item done?
the problem is stuff like https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70613 (due to changes in DataModel and not the serializers) and https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66632 were not caught with our existing tests. it's helpful to take an actual dump and (at minimum) verify that all entities can be deserialized. if we find issues, then we fix them and add test cases.
